Convert times between time zones worldwide

Understanding Time Zones

A time zone is a region of the Earth that observes a uniform standard time. The world is divided into roughly 24 time zones, each approximately 15 degrees of longitude wide. However, actual boundaries follow political and geographical considerations rather than strict longitude lines.

Daylight Saving Time

Many regions advance their clocks by one hour during summer months (DST). This adds complexity to time conversions because the offset changes depending on the date. Our converter uses the IANA time zone database, which automatically accounts for DST transitions, ensuring accurate conversions year-round.

UTC — The Universal Reference

Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) is the reference point for all time zones. It does not observe DST. When you see a time zone described as UTC+8, it means that zone is 8 hours ahead of UTC. Aviation, computing, and international communication all rely on UTC as the standard.

Common Mistakes

  • Forgetting that DST status depends on the specific date — summer and winter conversions yield different results
  • Assuming all countries use DST — many tropical nations and most of Asia do not observe it
  • Confusing UTC with GMT — they are currently the same, but GMT is a time zone while UTC is a time standard

Pro Tips

  • Always specify the date when converting time zones, not just the time — DST rules depend on it
  • Use UTC when scheduling events across many time zones to avoid confusion
  • Check both the source and target zone for DST — they may not switch on the same date

Real-World Examples

Scheduling a global meeting

A meeting at 9 AM in New York (ET) is 2 PM in London (GMT) and 10 PM in Tokyo (JST)

Planning a flight

A 14-hour flight departing Tokyo at 10 PM JST arrives in LA at 4 PM PT the same day (due to crossing the International Date Line)

Coordinating a deadline

A deadline at 5 PM Friday in Sydney (AEST) is midnight Thursday in New York (ET)

About Time Zone Converter

What is a Time Zone?

A time zone is a region of the Earth that observes a uniform standard time for legal, commercial, and social purposes. Time zones tend to follow the boundaries of countries and their subdivisions rather than strictly following longitude, because it is convenient for areas in frequent communication to keep the same time.

The world is divided into roughly 24 time zones, each approximately 15 degrees of longitude wide. However, the actual boundaries are irregular and determined by political and geographical considerations. Some countries span multiple time zones (like the United States, Russia, and Australia), while others use a single time zone across their entire territory (like China, which uses a single time zone despite spanning five geographical zones).

Daylight Saving Time (DST) adds another layer of complexity, as many regions advance their clocks by one hour during summer months. Our converter uses the IANA time zone database, which automatically accounts for DST transitions, so you always get accurate conversions regardless of the time of year.

How to Use This Tool

Select the source time zone from the "From" dropdown and the target time zone from the "To" dropdown. The source defaults to your browser's detected time zone and the target defaults to UTC. Enter the date and time you want to convert using the date and time picker.

The conversion happens in real time as you change any input. The result shows both the source time and the converted time in a clear, easy-to-read format. You can also see the current time in both zones at the top of the page, which updates every second.

Use the swap button between the two time zone dropdowns to quickly reverse the conversion direction. This is useful when you need to convert times back and forth between two zones.

Common Time Zones

Our converter includes 29 major time zones covering cities and regions around the world. Here are some of the most commonly used:

  • UTC -- Coordinated Universal Time, the reference point for all time zones. Used in aviation, computing, and international communication.
  • ET (Eastern Time) -- New York time zone, used by the US East Coast. Important for financial markets and business operations.
  • PT (Pacific Time) -- Los Angeles time zone, used by the US West Coast. Home to Silicon Valley and Hollywood.
  • GMT/BST -- London time zone, the historical basis for civil timekeeping. Greenwich Mean Time in winter, British Summer Time in summer.
  • CET -- Central European Time, used by Paris, Berlin, and most of continental Europe.
  • JST-- Japan Standard Time, 9 hours ahead of UTC. Used in one of the world's largest economies.
  • AEST -- Australian Eastern Standard Time, used by Sydney and the most populated parts of Australia.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this tool account for Daylight Saving Time?

Yes. Our converter uses the IANA time zone database (also known as the tz database), which includes historical and current DST rules for every time zone. When you convert a time, the tool automatically applies the correct offset based on whether DST is in effect at that date and time in both the source and target zones.

Why does my local time zone not appear in the list?

The tool auto-detects your browser's time zone and selects it as the default source zone. If your specific city is not listed, choose the nearest major city in the same time zone. All IANA time zones are available in the dropdown, so your zone should be represented even if your city is not explicitly named.

How accurate is the conversion?

The conversion is as accurate as your browser's implementation of the IANA time zone database. Modern browsers are kept up to date and provide accurate conversions. For critical applications like scheduling international meetings or flights, you may want to verify the result with an additional source.

Can I convert between any two time zones?

Yes. You can select any combination of source and target time zones from the dropdown menus. The tool supports all standard IANA time zones, which covers virtually every inhabited location on Earth.
